Esther is actually my least favourite character, but I'll try to tone down the negative commentary about her in the outfit descriptions for your convenience.
Anime Empire Arc It was difficult to get a reference for this outfit for it was visible for quite a short time and I had hard time locating the correct episode. |
Anime Empire Arc I had a nice character sheet of Ion's similar uniform, but none for Esther. I thought that Ion's version would help me when drawing Esther's outfit from blurry Youtube screencaps, but it turned out that it was different pretty much everywhere: the hood was different colour, the sleeves had more detail, the jewel things were different colour, the "skirt" was shorter, he had black thights whereas Esther had none, his shoes were completely different... Oh, the hat was different too. |
Manga Empire arc Not surprising that while the novel gives Esther a rather long skirt and a miniskirt for Ion, the manga shows more skin for Esther as well. |
Manga Empire Arc This was one of the first outfits I drew for this game. At first the blue things were red but then I noticed from a coloured opening spread that they should be blue instead. I guess I'd have to update Seth's version from the Seth game too. |
Novel ROM III Of course the shirt just needed to have frills on its hem so I couldn't reuse the manga version... |
Novel ROM III What is that horn thing anyway? Do you blow in it, or drink from it, or keep stuff in it or whatever? Kind of surprising how the female lead had more conservative clothes than Ion. The novel artwork either gave her pants or a relatively long skirt, whereas Ion's version is mostly a miniskirt. |
Novel art, character sketches I'm fairly certain that that is not what the shoes are supposed to look like, but I thought it'd be nice to include some variation. |
Novel art, character sketches I like the pants, they were a nice addition. Yet again the shirt had those random THORES scribbles I never understood... |
Manga ch 22 cover image One of the first outfits I drew for this. What a horrible colour! I wasn't really interested in drawing the hair from this as an alternative hairstyle, but since manga only gave her one other hairstyle and even anime had two I had to include it. |
Manga ch 39 If you're going to draw a pyjama please draw a proper on- oh wait, that's underwear? For some reason I seem to colour her black&white manga outfits pink. Maybe it's because pink is my least favourite colour and Esther is my least favourite character. Hu ha ha, take that, Esther! If you make me draw a dress up of you because of your interesting wardrobe, at least you'll get some pink outfits! My revenge is magnificent! Hu ho ho~~ Sometimes I just amaze myself. |
Manga artwork from the end of vol 12 Usually suspenders go over the shirt, but this picture made my layering much easier with putting them under it. |
Manga ch 40 cover image This one looks like it was stolen from Mirka's wardrobe. It was quite a pain, because I had to colour it three times to get even somewhat satisfiable result; the previous incarnations were too greyish. I had slight trouble understanding the lower part. Is it a skirt or pants? I don't quite remember why I went with skirt in the end. |
Manga Imitation Star arc shorts like that are ~exactly~ what I'd wear if I were to carry out a commando attack~~~ Ugh, fanservice sucks. At least the jacket is nice, even if I made it a bit too long. And now that I think of it the belt should probably have the leg part too... The white turtleneck shirt was better visible in the pictures where she wasn't wearing the jacket, but I didn't feel necessary to add it too. |
Novel ROM I The partisan outfit from the novels actually looks something that could be useful instead of the fanservice thing from the manga. Unfortunately I didn't quite understand how this was supposed to work. The sketch and the end result are a bit different (but not enough for me to be bothered to treat them as separate outfits), and the sketch is... sketchy, and the pic from the novel is hard to get because of the lightning and the pose. |
Novel ROM IV At first I felt very relieved this was the same outfit as the previous one because they looked like a pain to draw, but closer inspection revealed that they weren't same at all. And since ROM IV hasn't been published in English I couldn't find a better quality reference picture either. Now that I think of it, I could've given her a new hat for this one too. |
Manga ch 1 I had trouble understanding what kind of shirt/coat the shirt thing is supposed to be. This outfit was visible in way too few panels for me to understand it properly, and all those panels were pretty obscure. I would have wanted to have some kind of pattern for the shirt and hat, but unfortunately Flash doesn't seem to have such an option unless you use bitmaps, which was something I don't want to include in my TB games. How come the scarf only has one end hanging? Where's the other? |
Manga artwork from the end of vol 11 I really didn't understand the socks. What are those black lines right under her pants in the reference picture? I decided to make them suspenders for the socks, since she already had 'normal' black socks. You can't see her shoes completely, but this time I decided to do it properly and actually check what AX priest shoes could look like instead of just making it plain black with no detail with the explanation "well duh you can't prove the shoes couldn't be that simple!!!". I really should have used slightly lighter black for this one. |
Manga ch 7 One of the older outfits from year ago. I really like this one, though I don't think I chose the best colourscheme for it. It's a shame Kiyo didn't draw that much casual Esther clothes in the manga, they're pretty nice. |
Anime episode 16 I seriously doubt that that bathrobe could stay that way, according to the laws of physics (?) it shouldn't cover her... body without a belt to keep it in place. But since BubbaTheMagpie is a clean and no-nonsense site we can be happy that this picture didn't turn it into one with mature content. Actually the bathrobe does have a belt thingy, it was visible in the picture of the same outfit from behind, but it can't be seen from front so I didn't draw it. |
And now begin the Nun outfits. It was pretty horrible since common sense says that in most cases it's just the same outfit with a little chance in the hem etc, but because of my stupid principles I had to treat them all as different outfits and thus draw 9 white nun uniforms...
Novel artwork At first I thought this was a good reference picture for her novel nun uniform, but then it turned out that instead of the actual thing she wears in the story this is some more detailed alternative version... Actually the head thing had one metal thing more than the manga version, but since not counting that it was identical I thought it would have been unnecessary to include yet another one. |
Novel white nun uniform Her main novel nun uniform. At first I had drawn a lot more detailed one with blue pattern on the hem before I realised that that wasn't what she always wears. |
Manga white nun uniform I had slight trouble deciding how to present the manga nun uniform. In the more detailed pictures the buttons were showing, but in some it was just plain white. I decided that it was just the artist being lazy and included the buttons. |
Anime white nun uniform Her anime nun outfit sure is boring. At least it was easy to draw... |
Novel art, drama CD cover This was one of the last reference pictures I found for this game. It was very much unwelcome; yet another nun outfit with a time-consuming hem pattern that wouldn't turn out well anyway. |
Manga artwork Her outfit from a manga artbook picture which didn't appear in the manga. Of course it's just the same nun outfit that's been simplified to fit a chibi character, but for some reason I felt a need to draw it too... |
Manga vol 1 cover flap This one probaly shouldn't have included in the first place. The manga reference picture sure makes the hem look a bit different, but that difference doesn't really carry out to my version. And the brown rag really wasn't that needed... I decided that the blue rag wasn't a part of the outfit since it doesn't look like it was attached to her in any way |
Novel artwork, character sketches Annnd yet another nun uniform! This one really could have been left out, it doesn't add anything to the game. |
Manga ch 43 cover image A closer inspection revealed that yes, the embroidery on the hem is indeed different from the normal manga nun uniform... Well at least this one was torn so it adds a bit more than just the same uniform with different hem. This pic revealed her shoes better; I had drawn the top part wrong before seeing it. These "Saint Esther" pics kind of annoy me... |
Anime episode ??? I haven't seen the anime but I presume there's an Esther flashback. I guess she's cute? Some day I'll have enough willpower to check which episode this was from... |
Anime blue nun uniform It was boring how her anime nun uniforms were just palette swaps of each other. Well, less work for me that is. |
Novel artwork, character sketches There was yet another THORES sketch of the first nun outfit but I decided that it was similar enough to the finished product so I only drew this one. I dunno, it might be fun if this one had been used instead, it would've been a nice variation. And it wouldn't have mattered that much since it only appeared in one arc. |
Novel/manga blue nun uniform In general I hate drawing embroidery and stuff like that, but I have to admit that it was a bit annoying how I could not include the pattern of the hem properly for this one. I had such a nice reference for it, so I was a bit sad for not being able to use it properly. For this one I decided that the manga version was identical enough not to draw it as a separate piece. I doubt that anyone misses it... |
Novel artwork, THORES Fabrica Theologiae interview background drafts Uhhhh whut? For starters, I'm not even 100% sure if that's even Esther. The hair matches but the face and expression... don't. But whatever, I can't think who else it could be, excpet for maybe Asthe who has a different hairstyle. Then the outfit. What was I thinking anyway? Let's just say that it's a nightgown, even if the white shirt part doesn't really support that theory. Besides, why would she wear jewelry like that if she was planning going to sleep? Anyway I like how the hem turned out, I'm glad I bothered to add some frills. The folds and shading would still need some work though. Also the jewelry was drawn super lazily. I don't even like drawing accessories but I've noticed that my visitors like them a lot more than I do so I guess it's ok. |
Novel ROM V / Manga Queen Esther arc Booooo manga for giving the exact same outfit here! Well, to be fair it might be better. I really hate drawing pattern like that... Which is the reason why it looks pretty bad and lazy. But the dress from the reference is quite nice, it might be one of my favourite Esther outfits. |
Manga ch 54/51 cover This is one of the few outfits I'm actually satisfied with, not counting the headband which doesn't really layer with the manga hair. And I may have made the dress a bit too long; the socks could be a bit more visible. I would have very much preferred for Kiyo not to recycle the same outfit in two covers. |
Anime episode 15 Almost forgot about this dress; I had seen it while looking for anime reference for Asthe's and Seth's outfits but it was so obscure that I didn't remember it when I first started collecting reference. The hat is pretty lazy. It'd look a lot better if you could see the brim from under, but that would have required thinking how it'd layer with all the different hairstyles so I took the easy way. This outfit was the one that made me realise how unnecessarily large breasts I gave her... |
Novel artwork, THORES Fabrica Theologiae interview background drafts This was... I don't quite know. It had so little detail and lacked poofy shoulders, frill everywhere and an abundance of pearls so I decided it was not a formal queen outfit. The jewelry is pretty off and lazy, but whatever. Anyway what was I thinking with that colourscheme? |
Manga ch 10 I still don't quite understand how the shoes work. They have straps, yet she's wearing stockings... Which I rushed through, but it would have been a real pain to try to replicate the tone properly. |
Novel ROM VI (Or was it ROM V? I have a hard time keeping track of this fabulous Queen Esther stuff) One of the first outfits I drew for this game, the artwork is almost a year old. I hope it doesn't stick out too much... For some reason I apparently wanted her feet to be visible. No idea why that was, it looks just stupid. The pattern is very lazy, I couldn't be bothered to draw it properly. If you look closely she's missing one string of pearls in the dress up; there's supposed to be four of them. But since there are only three coming from the crown the fourth one must be around her neck, which would have caused me serious layering problems so I settled with just three. But there's so much going on in the dress anyway that leaving even some detail out probably improves it... |
Novel art from "Stories untold", character introduction page I seriously wasn't interested in drawing that dress again so I decided that it's the same and only drew the crown. That's pretty horrible a hairdo if you ask me... |
Novel art from ??? I... didn't quite get this. At first I was sure it was a new and different dress, but the more I looked at it the more it started to look like her main white coronation dress. The only differences I could see were the pattern on those... hanging straps and the colour of the her sleeve ruffles/that thing on her waist. And because redrawing the outfit just because of those would have been quite a pain I just decided that it's the same and drew the hem pattern to the other outfit... The flowers on her head are new at least. I had some problem layering them, so they don't go with the ponytails. Why is the picture so bad quality? Where is it from anyway? Also, it must be blowing pretty damn hard for the wind to lift such a heavy-looking cape. |
Novel art from Stories Untold This is one of the cases where the fact that my rose-drawing skills near zero comes to the play. The outfit from the reference is quite nice, but I seriously failed to draw it properly... Whatever. And the silly frill collar required me to draw the dress in two parts, without it I would only have needed one layer. |
Manga artwork from ??? Yet another reference picture with unspecified origin. Where is it from? Who scanned it? And why is there not a better version around? It's kind of embarrassing but the cape doesn't go with the other dresses because of the collar. Whoops! And it's even more embarrassing to notice now that I forgot the tassels... |
Anime episode 24 I really didn't know how to colour this one. The character sheet kind of makes it cream coloured, and I couldn't be bothered to check the anime episode on whether I should still make it pure white. To be fair I had another reference picture of this outfit where the collar had slightly more detail but I really didn't want to include the exact same dress with just one more line. The folds obiviously shamelessly copied from the reference picture. I should learn to draw them myself, I don't like copying. She probably should have the less detailed hairstyle with this one but it has silly layering problems with the collar... |
Anime DVD cover I'm fairly certain that I should have though of something more detailed for the lower part of the dress as well. It looks pretty hilarious when the collar is cluttered with detail and there's nothing on the hem... I actually tried to draw some scribbles to it, but they made it look even worse, so I'll have to stick with this. |
Novel artwork One of her prettiest novel queen dresses in my opnion, which turned out horrible in the dress up because of the lazy work on the hem. The gloves for this one were a bit of a pain; at first I had given her short gloves before I realised that I'd have to redraw them because of the dress having short sleeves and long gloves instead. I still think that those jewel things on her head looks silly. They're like Christmas lanterns! |
Thores' Christmas 2010 sketches One of the few Thores Christmas sketches that had colour. At first I thought I wouldn't be bothered to draw the stripes on the hem because I had quite bad experience on them, but it just didn't feel right because the sleeves and top part had stripes. So I just copied the hem from another dress... Now that I think of it, a plain black hem would've given some variation. Is this the only one of her queen dresses not to have an insane collar? |
Novel artwork from Stories untold I know that they used to wear collars like that but I still find it ridiculous. Why ruin such a nice and simple dress with something like that! This was one of the first novel dresses I drew for her. I had the coronation dress behind me, and it took a lot of time, so I thought this one would be faster. I mean, it's pretty simple; just black and some stripes, no insane patterns, no multilayered hems, no frill everywhere, no bottom part with super detailed hem visible etc. The sleeves went pretty nicely behind the hem so they didn't need another layer. Everything went quite smoothly, even if the stripes were a bit annoying. Then I just had to notice that ooooh, if you zoom in you notice that on her puffy sleeves there are pearls in the stripes! I tried drawing the pearls to the sleeves and it looked pretty nice. So of course I had to draw pearls to all of the stripes. I bet there's over a thousand of them... And they're so small that you can't see them anyway! Oh well... Failed to understand the pearls on the crown. There's four strings coming from the crown, yet there seems to be a lot more around her. To be fair I couldn't care and just put four strings haning. For some reason I didn't draw the rosary necklace attached to this dress. |
Novel artwork from Stories untold This one really suffered when I drew it. The colours turned out too dull and dark, and I couldn't get all the detail included. Whatever, I never liked this anyway... Luckily the stripes on the hem didn't require pearls like those of that other black-with-stripes dress. I had slight trouble understanding how the sleeves were supposed to work so I just whipped up something. The chest part looks really uncomfortable. I would notice that she is a female even if she didn't articulate it that much... And I presume the picture is supposed to be dramatic, but I can't help but find her tears flowing in the wind pretty ridiculous. |
Novel artwork This picture might be the reason I got the idea of an Esther dress up a year ago in the first place. I had recently gotten myself new credits (a money type system they used to have, you needed credits in order to be allowed to download anything from that site. Credits could be earned by contributing to the site) on my Minitokyo account, and then while browsing TB pictures I accidentally downloaded this picture. I wasn't really interested in it, but I felt that my credits would go to waste if I didn't do anything with it, so I decided to draw it in a dress up. Nowadays Minitokyo doesn't have the credit system any more so it wouldn't really matter anymore though... Since the reference picture had an orangeish colourshceme I had trouble understanding the colours. Plus the pattern of the dress was so blurry that I really didn't know what to draw. I tried drawing it with lighter outlines so that it'd draw less attention, but I don't really know how that worked. What was the point in drawing the thights anyway, in my dress up they get completely covered by the dress... |
Novel artwork, character sketches Another idea for the ROM I dress. I kind of like this more than the other, or at least how they turned out when I drew them. Except for the collar, that looks just silly. |
Novel ROM I If we're entirely fair I think these are two different dresses. But by the time I noticed that I had gotten pretty far in making of the game so I wasn't exactly happy to notice that I'd have to draw yet another practically identical outfit, plus I had already created the .jpg reference image on the right so I would have had to change that too. But if you look at the collars they kind of look different. I hope I'll never get the idea to make a pattern like that. It was a lot of work and it loooooads on my computer, and it doesn't even look that good. The novels say that this is a "bluish-purple evening dress with violet brocade designs". I'm not too familiar with English colour terms, but I understood that the mixture of red and blue is purple if it's close to red, and violet if it's close to blue. So what the heck is "bluish purple" anyway? |
Anime episode 4 This was boring to draw, but a lot more pleasurable than the novel counterpart which took way lot more time. This was also the reason why I expected the novel version to be pink or at least red. Why did the anime have to give her a pink one when the novels clearly said it was purple? |
Novel artwork Excuse me but I don't like this dress and its colourscheme and the little pattern on the dress. The crown is quite silly and over-the top, it's like it couldn't decide what it's trying to be. And she has those Christmas lanterns in her hair again (at least she has combed her hair this time) I still don't quite get how the sleeves are supposed to work. Luckily for me the lower part of the sleeve that is visible shows that it's plain blue, none of those little star things. So I got a reason not to draw any on the hem either. |
Novel artwork, character sketches The artist's different ideas for her hairstyle. Some of these turned out surprisingly well. I really like both rigthmost hairstyles, especially the one on the last row. |
